Even if you formatted the hard disk and (re)installed an operating system, there are ways to recover lost data. However, the longer you have used the hard disk, the more difficult it will be to recover data. The recovery procedure is the same, however, it takes more time and it cannot be guaranteed that all data can be recovered.
There are several data recovery programs available on the market that do not always do what you expect them to do. Some programs try to edit the data on your hard disk, which may result in overwriting the data, thus making it impossible for us to recover it.

What you must never do
In case of hard disk failure:
Secure your data. Do NOT use the hard disk if an operating system is installed and in use (switch off your computer). Do not install any software on the hard disk.
Never try to open the hard disk yourself. This may only be done in a clean room. Dust in the air will deposit on the platters and the reading heads will not be able anymore to accurately read the data from the magnetic fields on the platters. Even the slightest deviation in this delicate process constitutes corrupt files and destroys the data making data recovery impossible.
