The DOS© operating system has specific characteristics with regard to data recovery. It can be used for many storage media in various configurations, such as:
FAT16 and FAT32 are often used. Both configurations require a different approach. When the data is not properly recovered, loss of data will be the consequence.

In case of hard disk failure:
Secure your data. Do NOT use the hard disk if an operating system is installed and in use (switch off your computer). Do not install any software on the hard disk.
Never try to open the hard disk yourself. This may only be done in a clean room. Dust in the air will deposit on the platters and the reading heads will not be able anymore to accurately read the data from the magnetic fields on the platters. Even the slightest deviation in this delicate process constitutes corrupt files and destroys the data making data recovery impossible.
